courtyard

what?

Our courtyard is the place to enjoy a platter of cheese or a cheese toastie, with either a glass of something or a great cup of coffee. Depending on the time of year, we sell either cheese toasties or cheese platters, which you can have with wine, beer, cider, perry or fruit juice.

Coffee is available from our neighbours at 2 Station Road, Fuelled By Caffeine. Order from them and then just walk your coffee aroudn the corner to the courtyard.

As well as the courtyard, there is seating under cover in the barn. So you can defintiely stay dry!

where?

Go down the lane at the side of The Cheese Shed, then turn left through the grey gates. There are menus on the tables; someone will come out to take your order.

when?

The courtyard is open Tues-Saturday, with cheese toasties and/or platters available 12-2.

about the courtyard and barn

The barn was a blacksmiths until 1938 (we still have the horsehoes) and a handloom weavers from then until about 2018 (we still have the shuttles). After we acquired 1 Station Road in 2020, we began to use the barn for storage, but did little with the courtyard until 2023.

In the spring of 2023 we began work. The barn front was re-clad in local larch, and the wall at the front of the flowerbed was rebuilt using old (pre-1840) local bricks but keeping the curvy shape. The bed was replanted - including a rowan tree -  the whole area painted, and the space opened in July. Later on in the year we introduced screens in the barn, separating customers from our storage areas, giving cover on rainy days.

In 2024 we introduced planters, one of which features a pear tree. We also installed an unusual artwork in the form of a large metal disc with magnetic 'cheeses' which our customers are free to re-arrange!

We originally offered just cheese platters, toasties followed in January of 2024, and our ideas continune to develop,
