Not all occasions involve a cast of thousands. We regularly get asked for cakes to suit 30 or 40.
Here’s one such. The base is a Smoked Wedmore. Jemima Cordle takes her classic Duckett’s Caerphilly recipe and adds a line of chives right through the middle of the cheese. To make it double interesting, the cheese is smoked: it’s unusual, attractive, and most importantly, very tasty!
Next comes Sue Proudfoot’s sweet, springy Miss Muffet, and this leads to a 500g ‘Mini Vinney’, i.e a small version of the classic Westcountry blue from Dorset. Topping it all off is a delightfully eccentric small cheese, Little Wallop. Developed by Blur bassist Alex James and cheese guru Juliet Harbutt, this tiny goats’ cheese is washed in Somerset Cider Brandy and wrapped in vine leaves!
This should be around 4kg, perhaps a bit over, so we’d be thinking of maybe 40 people? Our cake was photographed by top Bovey lensman Bim and decorated by the wondrous Annie. Don’t forget that we only supply the cheese ... so you’ll need a creative person to take on the decorating duties.
