Eldren is the latest cheese from Cranborne Chase Cheeses of Dorset, and like the earlier Alderwood and Win Green, it takes its name from a wood on the Cranborne Chase estate.  I first came across a version of this cheese at the British Cheese Festival in 2006.  That was St Nicholas, which seemed really different and I was very struck by it.  For whatever reason, however, it seemed to be more than usually hard to get, so we were never able to list it.

Fast forward to the same event in 2007, and I found them showing off their 175g Eldren which is, I think, a younger version of the same thing. Made from unpasteurised cow’s milk it is a fresh cheese with a creamy texture, comparable to a baked cheesecake, with a clean zesty taste. Although best eaten young - when there can be lemony taste - this cheese if left to mature for up to 3 weeks will further develop its creamy texture.
